Pakatan open to Bersatu tie-up for Melaka state election as Amirudin says ‘that is politics’

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) has expressed openness to collaborating with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) during the upcoming Melaka state election, according to Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. This indicates that former political adversaries might consider cooperation as parties strategize ahead of the polls.

PH's election director affirmed that the coalition would not object to exploring partnerships with Bersatu or other parties, should circumstances warrant it and if such alliances could maintain political stability. Amirudin recalled past instances of PH working with Umno and Bersatu, as well as PAS's previous collaborations with Bersatu, its separation from the party, and possible reunions with Umno.

These fluctuations in alliances, Amirudin argued, should not be seen as political uncertainty but rather as a demonstration of political maturity. He assured that PH remains united and willing to compromise with other parties, including allowing BN to contest seats previously held by PH. Amirudin emphasized that any potential alliance would rely on genuine commitment to preserving the stability and prosperity gained under the unity government.

He also cited the political upheaval following the Sheraton Move in 2020, which led to the collapse of the PH federal government, warning against repeating such turmoil. Amirudin was appointed to oversee possible electoral cooperation between PH and BN in Melaka. The current Melaka state assembly term ends in December, necessitating an election within 60 days of its dissolution.

BN plans to defend all 21 seats they won in the 2021 Melaka election while remaining open to cooperation. BN secured 21 of the 28 seats in that election, while PH obtained five, and PN garnered two. PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang stated that PN would withdraw cooperation with BN if BN opted to run in alliance with PH.
