National stability must reflect partnership with Sabah, Sarawak, says Salleh

Former Sabah chief minister Salleh Said Keruak emphasized that national stability should reflect the partnership that formed Malaysia, and that every region within the federation must feel respected. In response to Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki's focus on Muslim unity and Malay interests as the foundation of political stability, Salleh highlighted the need to recognize the unique social, political, and historical contexts of Sabah and Sarawak.

He stressed that while the aspiration for greater Malay and Muslim unity is understandable, it should not be the sole basis for defining Malaysia's national political stability. Salleh praised Sabah and Sarawak's political traditions rooted in inclusiveness, mutual respect, and accommodation among diverse ethnic groups, religions, and cultures.

He called for a better understanding of the safeguards and spirit of partnership in the Malaysia Agreement 1963, which formed the federation in 1963. Salleh highlighted the importance of Sabah and Sarawak's history in shaping their understanding of their role within the federation and urged fellow Malaysians in Peninsular Malaysia to appreciate this history and the spirit of partnership.

He reiterated that Malaysia's long-term stability must be inclusive, respecting the country's diversity, upholding federalism, and recognizing the distinct history, position, and aspirations of Sabah and Sarawak. Ultimately, Salleh emphasized that national leaders must understand and respect these foundations for Malaysia to be strong and for the nation to thrive.
