National stability must reflect partnership with Sabah, Sarawak, says Salleh

Former Sabah chief minister Salleh Said Keruak has emphasized that Malaysia's political stability must take into account the unique social and political realities of Sabah and Sarawak. He made these remarks in response to Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki's assertion that Muslim unity and Malay interests form the core of the nation's political stability.

While these concerns may be valid within Peninsular Malaysia, Salleh argued that when discussing national political stability, we must also recognize the distinct history, social composition, and political realities of Sabah and Sarawak. He stressed that the pursuit of greater Malay and Muslim unity should not be the exclusive basis for defining Malaysia's national political stability.

Salleh highlighted the importance of Sabah and Sarawak's political traditions, shaped by inclusiveness, mutual respect, and accommodation among various ethnic groups, religions, and cultures. He called for a deeper understanding of the safeguards and the spirit of partnership outlined in the Malaysia Agreement of 1963 (MA63), as this history is fundamental to how Sabahans and Sarawakians perceive their place within the federation.

Salleh also urged Peninsular Malaysians to appreciate this history and the spirit of partnership upon which Malaysia was founded. Ultimately, he stressed that Malaysia's long-term stability must be inclusive, acknowledging our diversity, upholding federalism principles, and respecting the unique history, position, and aspirations of Sabah and Sarawak.

National leaders must understand and respect these foundations for Malaysia to be strong when the spirit of partnership that formed the nation continues to be honored, and when every part of the federation feels respected, represented, and equally invested in the shared future.
