Man City open talks with Liverpool over Gakpo

Manchester City have opened discussions with Liverpool regarding the potential signing of forward Cody Gakpo. The 27-year-old Dutch player's future has become a significant talking point as the transfer window closes. While Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have shown interest in Gakpo, City is reportedly his preferred destination if he leaves Anfield before Tuesday's deadline.

City initiated formal communication with Liverpool on Saturday evening. The move comes after Liverpool agreed to sign Paris St-Germain winger Bradley Barcola in a deal worth up to £123 million. However, Liverpool reportedly prefers to secure another forward before making any decision on Gakpo's departure.

Gakpo joined Liverpool from his hometown club PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and has netted 33 goals in 91 Premier League matches. He provided the assist for Alexander Isak's goal in Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest at Anfield last weekend, contributing to the team's victory. In their first two matches this season, Gakpo scored a goal and provided an assist.

Liverpool considers Gakpo a versatile Premier League attacker, having scored a goal and delivered an assist in their opening games. However, they have not ruled out letting him go if a significant offer arrives. With the transfer window nearing its end, Liverpool and City will now evaluate the situation before sanctioning any move. Meanwhile, Liverpool hopes to sign another winger before the deadline, including Brighton's Yankuba Minteh and Crystal Palace's Ismaila Sarr.

Given the late timing of the talks, Gakpo may not be the first choice for Liverpool if a move occurs. The financial implications of a deal would be substantial for Liverpool, considering they paid £35 million for Gakpo in 2022. However, the club faces risks with the potential departures of Hugo Ekitike until 2027 due to a ruptured Achilles tendon and Alexander Isak's ongoing injury struggles.
