Malaysia’s Merdeka playlist blends nostalgia and fresh voices as patriotic songs resound again

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 — As Malaysians prepare to celebrate National Day, the patriotic mood is in full swing. The national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, can be seen everywhere, while patriotic songs fill the air on radio, in offices, and at celebrations. Songs such as Tanggal 31 Ogos, Warisan, Setia, Bahtera Merdeka and Saya Anak Malaysia have been perennial favorites for decades. However, Malaysia has also produced numerous new patriotic compositions each year, including this year's theme song, Aku Berjanji, by Faizal Tahir.

Renowned composer Datuk Mokhzani Ismail highlighted that the country boasts hundreds of patriotic songs since the 1950s. He explained that theme songs for National Day have been a tradition since 1970, with new compositions introduced annually. Although some songs are shared between National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations, the nation has a rich collection of patriotic tunes.

Mokhzani noted that older patriotic songs retain their appeal due to nostalgia, frequent airplay, and memorable melodies and lyrics. These songs have essentially become the "soundtrack" of Merdeka for several generations. He emphasized that the repeated play of these tracks in radio stations, television channels, and schools has ingrained them in the public consciousness, making it difficult for newer songs to gain widespread acceptance quickly.

One challenge faced by patriotic songs is their seasonal nature. Although they are extensively played during National Day celebrations, they often fade from public view once the festivities conclude, particularly when new songs are introduced the following year. Mokhzani expressed his appreciation for the interest shown by young composers and lyricists like Affan Mazlan and Rafiza Rahman.

He also acknowledged the positive influence of popular local artists such as Ernie Zakri, Khai Bahar, Aina Abdul, Stacy, Faizal Tahir, and Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza, who are contributing to the resurgence of patriotic songs among the younger generation.

To further promote patriotic songs, lyricist Datuk Habsah Hassan suggested that efforts should extend beyond government-controlled media to include private broadcasters, commercial establishments, and public spaces. She believed that if patriotic songs became a regular part of the soundtrack in shopping malls, hotels, airports, and public transport, they would gradually gain acceptance and even be hummed or sung along by the younger generation.
