On the historic day of August 31, 1957, when Tunku Abdul Rahman proclaimed Malaysia's independence, a lesser-known story unfolded behind the scenes. Telekom Malaysia's National Day short film, Gema Malaysia, pays tribute to these unsung heroes, inspired by a 1957 Malay Mail article. The film highlights the dedication of workers from the then Telecommunications Department, whose efforts ensured Tunku Abdul Rahman's proclamation could be heard across the nation.

While the stadium and Tunku's repeated cries of freedom form the familiar imagery of Merdeka, Gema Malaysia turns its attention to those who worked in the shadows. TM chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Putih emphasized the film's tribute to the sense of service, stating that Malaysia's progress has always been built by individuals who serve with purpose and step forward when it matters most.
