Lando Norris extends McLaren stay until 2030

London: Reigning Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris has penned a contract extension with McLaren that secures his future with the team until 2030. The news arrives just days after the British driver claimed back-to-back victories in the Dutch Grand Prix, reigniting his pursuit of a successful defense of his world championship title. McLaren revealed the extension, which includes an option for further multi-year deals beyond 2030, in a statement on Saturday.

Norris, who joined McLaren's junior program at the age of 17 and made his Formula 1 debut in 2019, expressed his joy at signing the new contract. "McLaren is my home, and I'm very pleased to be signing a new contract to keep me with the team until at least 2030," Norris said in a team statement. "When I started this journey nine years ago, I was clear about the goals I wanted to achieve: to get McLaren back to the front and to win championships.

We've achieved that goal, but we want more, we want to keep on winning, and we know as a team that we're capable of achieving it."

As the current season progresses, Norris sits fourth in the championship standings, trailing Mercedes driver Kimi Raikkonen by 83 points with 11 races remaining. His teammate, Oscar Piastri, extended his contract at the beginning of the 2025 season on a deal believed to extend until at least 2028. McLaren clinched constructors titles in both 2024 and 2025, ending a championship drought dating back to 1998, but the team faced challenges at the start of the current season after struggling to master new regulations.

Norris's resurgence has demonstrated that there is still considerable room for success. After securing wins in Hungary and the Netherlands, the team is optimistic about his potential to capitalize on an improved car. McLaren's principal, Andrea Stella, praised Norris, stating, "He is an exceptional driver, someone who combines outstanding natural speed with maturity, consistency, and a strong commitment to McLaren, but above all, he is a special human being who is valued by everyone in the team."

Stella added that Norris and Piastri form one of the strongest partnerships and most united teams in Formula 1, with McLaren offering him one of the MCL39 cars used to secure his world championship title as a gift.
