Nancy Grace Roman, often referred to as the "Mother of Hubble," was a pioneering scientist and leader in the field of astronomy. Born on May 16, 1925, Roman's early interest in astronomy was nurtured by her parents, a music teacher and a geophysicist. After completing her undergraduate studies, Roman pursued graduate research at the University of Chicago, working at the Yerkes Observatory as the first woman on the academic staff. Her dedication to astronomy paid off when she was recruited by NASA in 1959 to create the agency's first astronomy program. This marked the beginning of her influential career at NASA, where she became the agency's first-ever chief astronomer and first female executive.
