Justice Mokgohloa, a pioneer for African Women in the Judiciary

Justice Fikile Mokgohloa, a pioneering jurist who broke barriers for African women in the judiciary, has been honored with a special funeral in Pretoria. The late Supreme Court of Appeal judge passed away last week after a courageous fight against cancer. Her funeral was marked by a Police Ceremonial Guard of Honour, led by female officers, paying tribute to her remarkable life and career.

Mokgohloa's passion for the law was evident in her dedication to her job, as her son, Mohau Mokgohloa, recounted. She invested countless hours explaining complex legal concepts with boundless enthusiasm, inspiring both her family and friends. Yet, above all, Mokgohloa held the well-being of her community in high regard. As her son noted, she was deeply committed to empowering people by teaching them about the legal system and how to access it.

Mokgohloa's professional ascent is a testament to the power of hard work and resilience. Born in 1961 during the height of apartheid, she graduated with a B Juris and LLB degree, eventually becoming a justice at the Supreme Court of Appeal. Her accomplishments serve as an inspiration to women and girls breaking through gender barriers in a male-dominated legal system, dispelling stereotypes along the way.

Chief Justice Mandisa Maya emphasized the importance of addressing judicial wellness in light of Mokgohloa's passing. She highlighted how Mokgohloa's health was likely compromised by the immense stress of her demanding job, with her chemotherapy treatments seemingly overshadowed by her unwavering commitment to her duties. Maya acknowledged that this tragic loss underscores the urgent need to prioritize the wellness of judges, recognizing that many of them are now grappling with declining health.

Mokgohloa leaves behind her loving son, a young grandson, and her siblings, who are coping with the profound loss of their esteemed family member.
