Extremely high fire danger warned for Northern Cape as SA braces for cool Sunday

South Africa anticipates a cool Sunday, 30 August 2026, with an extremely high fire danger warning issued for portions of the Northern Cape region. The South African Weather Service (Saws) predicts fine and cool to warm conditions across various provinces. Gauteng will experience a fine day with high UVB sunburn index, while Mpumalanga and Limpopo can expect similar weather.

The North West province will have partly cloudy skies that turn fine and cool to warm later in the day. The Free State will be fine in the east with occasional showers in the south.

In contrast, the Northern Cape will start the day cloudy in the west, transitioning to fine later. Coastal winds will be fresh to strong southerly to south-easterly. Meanwhile, the Western Cape will be largely cloudy to partly cloudy, with cold to cool temperatures and a chance of light rain along the south coast and interior. Coastal winds will range from light to moderate south-westerly to moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly.

The Eastern Cape will witness a cooler day, with cloudy conditions in the west and fine in the north. Isolated showers and rain may occur in the coastal and interior regions. KwaZulu-Natal will start the day fine but become partly cloudy to cloudy from the east, transitioning to cool to warm temperatures. Scattered showers and rain are expected in the extreme south. Evening fog patches may appear over the southern interior, with moderate to fresh northerly to north-easterly winds in the coastal areas.
