An action plan to get rid the system of political corruption

Corruption among political leaders poses a significant threat to the integrity of a nation's governance, driven by high campaign costs and financial pressures. Quid pro quo arrangements, such as biased public contract awards and exclusive permits, institutionalize a culture of patronage. This breeds inflation, siphons national tax revenues, and leads to the misappropriation of sovereign funds, as seen with the 1MDB scandal.

To combat this, Malaysia needs a comprehensive action plan focusing on systemic reform. First, a Political Financing Act must be enacted, mandating public disclosure of donor identities and contribution amounts, fair state funding distribution, and independent party financial audits. Second, all MPs, ministers, and high-ranking civil servants must declare assets publicly, reviewed by an independent committee.

Third, the enforcement and judiciary structure must be overhauled for full independence: the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission should be financially independent from the executive, and the chief commissioner and judicial appointments must be vetted by a bipartisan parliamentary committee.

Implementing a mandatory open tender system for government contracts and separating the attorney-general's role from the public prosecutor's will further ensure fairness in corruption prosecutions. Safeguarding media freedom as a true fourth estate, alongside strengthening the Whistleblower Protection Act, is crucial for external oversight.

As Malaysia prepares for future elections, implementing these reforms is no longer optional but necessary to restore trust in the nation's institutions.
