Video shows Philly officer leaving person in street before deadly hit-and-run

Philadelphia police are investigating an officer who failed to assist a man lying in the street before he was struck and killed by a car. The victim, a 48-year-old man, was hit and killed around 1:45 a.m. on Thursday in the 5500 block of Rising Sun Avenue in Olney. Surveillance video obtained by CBS News shows the officer pulling his car in front of the victim after he fell to the ground, then driving away while the victim remained on the road.

The victim was walking with an unsteady gait in the bike lane when he was hit. A civilian witness appeared to speak to the victim and then leave the scene. Two witnesses moved the victim out of the road and called 911, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver of the fatal car, a green 2023-26 Kia Sportage, fled the scene eastbound on Tabor Avenue. Police are searching for the driver and the car. The officer who initially spoke to the victim has been placed on administrative leave. Police Commissioner John M. Stanford described the incident as "very disturbing" and called for empathy and compassion, stating that it was not present in this case.
