Alcaraz says uncertainty over comeback fuelled 'intrusive thoughts'

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz described the most challenging aspect of his wrist injury layoff as intrusive thoughts about when he would return to competition. The 23-year-old Spaniard, who achieved his career Grand Slam with a victory at the Australian Open, will return to Flushing Meadows with minimal practice but under the watchful eye of high expectations as he aims for his third U.S. Open title.

Alcaraz missed the majority of the clay court season and also had to withdraw from the French Open, Wimbledon, and the North American hardcourt swing due to his injury. His first competitive match since returning was in the mixed doubles event with Serena Williams at the U.S. Open. While Alcaraz enjoyed his time at home, the prospect of returning to the court and the uncertainty of his readiness for key tournaments created significant mental obstacles.

The tournament's second seed, Alcaraz, will open with a match against Roman Safiullin, followed by potential quarter-final encounters with Arthur Fils, Ben Shelton, Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Frances Tiafoe, or Brandon Nakashima. The absence of world number one Jannik Sinner due to a persistent knee injury adds to the unusual situation.

Alcaraz expressed hope for Sinner's recovery and wished him well. The men's and women's singles main draws at the U.S. Open commence on Sunday.
