Alcaraz says uncertainty over comeback fuelled ‘intrusive thoughts’

Carlos Alcaraz, the seven-time Grand Slam champion, recounted the mental toll of his wrist injury layoff, which kept him out of tennis for nearly five months. The 23-year-old Spaniard, who achieved the career Grand Slam at the Australian Open, returned to New York for his US Open title defence with limited match practice. Alcaraz admitted that the uncertainty surrounding his timing of return was the most challenging aspect, leading to intrusive thoughts about whether he would be ready for Cincinnati, the US Open, or other upcoming tournaments.

Despite the difficulties, Alcaraz prioritised his health and avoided missing further competitions. He opens his campaign against Roman Safiullin and could advance to face top players like Arthur Fils, Ben Shelton, Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Frances Tiafoe, or Brandon Nakashima. Alcaraz's biggest rival, world number one Jannik Sinner, withdrew due to a persistent right knee injury.

Alcaraz hopes Sinner makes a swift recovery and looks forward to their potential future matchup. The US Open main draws commence on Sunday.
