2027 campaigns won’t stop n’assembly from legislative duties, says Akpabio

The Senate President of Nigeria, Godswill Akpabio, has reassured citizens that political campaigning leading up to the 2027 general elections won't interfere with the National Assembly's legislative tasks. Speaking to journalists at the Presidential Wing of the Victor Attah International Airport, Akpabio emphasized that representatives will continue fulfilling their constitutional duties despite the surge in political activities prior to the next election.

This statement followed his meeting with stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District, where Tinubu, Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno received confirmation for another term in office in 2027.

Concerns have emerged across the nation regarding whether electioneering could impact legislative and governmental responsibilities. However, Akpabio dismissed these worries, asserting that lawmakers possess the ability to manage both political pursuits and their mandate. He suggested that campaigning should occur during afternoons or evenings, allowing lawmakers to focus on their duties in the mornings.

According to Akpabio, politics and campaigning can be scheduled so as not to disrupt lawmaking. He affirmed that electioneering and legislative responsibilities are separate, and the National Assembly will persist in its core functions of lawmaking, oversight, and representation throughout the current administration.

The assurance from Akpabio arrives as political leaders, parties, and prospective candidates intensify consultations and mobilize support for the 2027 polls. The National Assembly will maintain its core functions, while lawmakers running for re-election or other political offices are expected to engage in their respective parties' campaign activities.
