World’s youngest reigning monarch King Oyo dies at 34

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who held the title of the world's youngest reigning monarch at just three years old, has passed away at the age of 34 in Uganda. The traditional ruler of Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda succumbed to an undisclosed illness while receiving treatment in the United States. The monarch's death has been described as an "immeasurable loss" to both his royal family and the people of Tooro by Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, the kingdom's Prime Minister.

Oyo became king in 1995 following his father's death, and was formally crowned at the age of 18 in 2010. Despite being a child monarch, he played a prominent role in Uganda's cultural landscape, championing causes such as youth empowerment, education, climate conservation and HIV/AIDS awareness. The Tooro Kingdom, one of Uganda's traditional kingdoms, follows a hereditary system and, although the nation is governed by an elected president, the monarchs retain significant cultural influence.

Oyo was the 13th monarch of Tooro, a kingdom established in the early 19th Century, and leaves behind a son who will succeed him.
