Water supply disrupted in parts of Western Accra after pipeline damage

Water supply in several Western Accra communities has been temporarily disrupted after a 500mm-diameter main pipeline was damaged during excavation work for underground storm drains. Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) reported that the pipeline burst following the excavation by AWERCO Construction Ltd between Kaneshie First Light and Hansonic Junction.

The affected areas include Mallam, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Mataheko, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Dansoman Township, and Chorkor, along with nearby regions. GWL's engineers are working to repair the damaged line, but the main challenge is gaining access to the flooded trench to expose the damaged section. Preparatory repairs are underway, and dewatering operations are ongoing.

The extent of the damage and the time needed for repairs have not been disclosed. The 500mm main pipeline is crucial for serving densely populated communities in western Accra, and the disruption is expected to impact households, businesses, and institutions until repairs are finished. GWL has apologized for the inconvenience and assured customers that they are doing their best to restore normal water supply as quickly as possible.

They will provide further updates through official channels. Until the pipeline is repaired, residents in the affected communities are advised to use alternative water sources while waiting for the water service to be restored.
