Viral video of cockroaches in food container prompts DBKL to shut BBQ outlet for 14 days (VIDEO)

On August 28, a video circulating on social media captured several cockroaches scurrying inside a food container at a barbecue restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. The footage, posted by a user on Threads under the account @aqilahmaria_, depicted the insects inside a container holding raw meat near another container with prawns. The user expressed her trauma from the incident and advised the public to thoroughly inspect their food before consumption.

Following the video's surge in popularity, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) launched an investigation into the restaurant. The Premises Sanitation Unit of the Titiwangsa Zone 5 Health Office, under the Health and Environment Department, conducted a follow-up inspection as a result of the complaint. The authorities ordered the restaurant to close for 14 days, from August 26 to September 9, 2026, in order to enable the establishment to carry out necessary corrective measures and thorough cleaning.

DBKL emphasized its commitment to maintaining food premises in the city that adhere to hygiene and public health standards, while safeguarding the interests and safety of city residents.
