Two killed in Proton X70 crash while fleeing police checkpoint in Gua Musang

Gua Musang, August 28 — Two men lost their lives in a road accident that unfolded when the Proton X70 they were in drifted into the opposite lane, collided with another vehicle, and ultimately struck a lamp post on Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis in Bukit Lanjut. The Gua Musang district police chief, Supt Sik Choon Foo, reported the incident at 10:24 am to local authorities.

Initial findings indicated that police officers were performing spot checks along Kilometre 16 of Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis when they identified a suspicious-looking Proton X70, which subsequently reversed towards Gua Musang town. Upon being pursued by the officers, the vehicle allegedly lost control, crossed lanes, collided with a Toyota Hilux, and then crossed the roadway before crashing into a lamp post.

The chief divulged that one occupant of the Proton X70 succumbed to injuries at the accident scene, while the other perished while receiving treatment at Gua Musang Hospital. The deceased were subsequently transferred to the hospital's forensic unit for post-mortem examinations. Several additional individuals from the Proton X70 sustained injuries and were transported to the same hospital for medical attention.

Fortunately, both the police officers and the driver of the Toyota Hilux were unharmed. Ongoing investigations aim to pinpoint all individuals involved and ascertain the precise sequence of events leading to the tragedy. The case is being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death through reckless or dangerous driving.
