US government unveils Sh930 million ground to modernise Kenya police

The US government has launched a $7 million (Sh930 million) initiative to modernise and professionalise Kenya’s police service. The project, which involves constructing new physical training grounds, was officially unveiled at the Kenya Police Training College in Kiganjo, Nyeri County, on Friday. The US Embassy in Kenya stated that the programme aims to support Kenya in building a modern, professional, and effective police force.

It emphasised that well-trained officers are essential to protect and serve citizens, noting that safety is crucial for both Kenyan and American businesses operating in the country.

The initiative follows ongoing efforts to enhance police training, professionalism, and effectiveness in Kenya. On Friday, President William Ruto presided over a graduation ceremony at the college, where he highlighted the need for a democratic Kenya free from politically-sponsored violence. He insisted that the police must act firmly, lawfully, and impartially against those involved in political violence.

Ruto praised the new ground as a significant investment in modernising police training and preparing officers for contemporary policing demands.

The US-backed project includes the building of new facilities and the upgrading of existing infrastructure at the college. These enhancements are intended to raise the standards of the officers. Ruto revealed that Kenya has completed a three-phase review of police remuneration, increasing the entry-level basic pay for a police constable from Sh21,645 to Sh29,360.

Additional salary adjustments have also been made across other ranks. The government is also addressing the critical shortage of police housing through the National Institutional Housing Programme, which has constructed over 2,000 units and is progressing on more than 9,500 others.
