South Korea leans toward military conscription for women

A recent survey shows that nearly 60% of South Koreans support the idea of young women serving mandatory military service alongside men, marking a significant shift in the taboo against conscripting women. The debate has been reignited due to factors such as a falling birth rate, shrinking number of recruits, and the belief that social equality demands women's participation.

However, some still argue that women should be kept away from the front lines and that the country should focus on advanced technologies like drones. South Korea's traditional conscription system is closely tied to gender roles, with men expected to protect the country and women responsible for childbirth, childcare, and the household.

Professor Hyobin Lee from Sogang University explains that men perform their service in their early 20s, which interrupts their education and career development. Gender equality and women's expanding opportunities in education and employment have fueled the debate. The nature of the military is also changing, with a shift away from physically demanding combat roles and towards technology-based defense.

A recent study by the Reform Institute found that 59% of respondents favored requiring women to undergo national service, while 34% were opposed. Despite support, concerns remain about the potential negative impact on women's careers and family planning due to the demanding nature of military service.
