Shaya Thursdays brings new energy to South African grassroots boxing

Golden Gloves' ambitious plan to revitalize South Africa's boxing development pipeline took its first step with a successful inaugural Shaya Thursdays event at Emperors Palace. The Pro-Am series aims to provide young amateurs and emerging professionals with regular opportunities to showcase their skills and potentially become future boxing stars.

Under the guidance of former South African boxing legend Jeff Ellis, the event featured six fights, blending both amateur and professional bouts. Head of events and programming Alveena Pillay expressed her delight, describing the atmosphere as electric and the turnout as impressive. For the amateurs, the exposure could be transformative, while professionals gained another avenue to secure fights and potentially attract the attention of other promoters and sponsors.

The event featured several standout performances, including a first-round stoppage win for Zimbabwean minimumweight boxer Beaven Sibanda and heavyweight prospect Ethan Peters extending his stoppage win streak to four fights. The long-term goal of Shaya Thursdays is to identify promising talent early on, helping them progress from grassroots gyms to professional ranks and potentially secure South African titles.

The community aspect of the event was also highlighted, with Pillay praising the willingness of boxers to support each other, even assisting those with limited resources. The strong response from spectators, with nearly 800 attendees, has encouraged Golden Gloves to explore expanding the event, indicating that Shaya Thursdays could become an integral part of the South African boxing calendar.
