Smyth Keeps His Cool to Win Sheerins George Bailey Trophy

On 19th August, the Sheerin's Golf Society hosted the George Bailey Trophy at Las Colinas. The event was sponsored by John Clark and saw 20 players compete in a full handicap Stableford format, split into two groups. The course, rearranged for the occasion, was reported to be in excellent condition. The weather was clear with a high temperature of 38 degrees Celsius.

Colin Smyth emerged victorious in group A with a score of 34 points, narrowly edging out runner-up Gary Hill, also with 34 points. Joe Bell finished third with 31 points. In group B, Tom Goulden claimed the win with 30 points, closely followed by Keith James, also with 30 points. John Clarke rounded out the top three with 29 points.

The nearest the pins for group A were holes 3 (Gary Hill), 8 (no winner), and 17 (Brian Gordon). For group B, holes 1 (Brian Court), 7 (Steve Day), and 16 (no winner) were the closest to the pins. The best front 9 was achieved by Brian Court with 17 points, while Brian Gordon led the way on the back 9 with the same score. A two-prize pot of €105 was won and shared between Paul Jones and Gary Hill following a friendly match play doubles quarter final.

The event concluded with a football card match, won by Gill Quinn, who secured €40 for the charities in 2026. The overall winner, Colin Smyth, was presented with the trophy by Brian Court on behalf of John Clark, the society's vice chairman.
