Mali music star Salif Keïta cancels South African concerts over ‘xenophobic violence’

Renowned Malian musician Salif Keïta has decided to cancel his South African concerts due to reports of "xenophobic violence" against African migrants, a sentiment he expressed in a message to festival organizers. South Africa has faced a surge in protests demanding the departure of undocumented migrants, with a deadline of September 30 set for their repatriation.

Tens of thousands of Africans have been voluntarily returned to their home countries, some alleging they have been victims of intimidation and attacks. The South African government has maintained that those taking matters into their own hands have been arrested. Keïta, known as the "Golden Voice of Africa," cited his concern for migrants' safety and dignity, stating that this was not a reflection of South Africa, the country he grew to love.

He emphasized that cancelling his appearance was a rejection of hate rather than a rejection of South Africans. The Free State's culture department expressed regret over Keïta's decision, describing the Macufe festival as a celebration of African unity. The musician, a pioneer in promoting African music globally, remains influential after a 50-year career.

The cancellation of his concert coincides with the repatriation of the first group of 173 Tanzanians, marking the end of decades spent in South Africa for some.
