Several NRIs, OCIs missing in Nepal floods as frantic family calls hit cellphone connectivity hurdle

Families of several Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) remain desperate for information on the whereabouts of their loved ones in Nepal as the country grapples with devastating flash floods. Venkatesh Venkatesh, a resident of Sydney, expressed frustration as he was unable to connect with his brother, Sreedharan Iyer, and his family, who were among the 13 people missing in the disaster.

He reported that all 13 were traveling together in Rasuwa district when the floods hit, but tour operators have been unable to provide any updates on their current location. Cellphone connectivity and road access to the area have been severely impacted, making it difficult for families to confirm whether their loved ones are stranded in the hills, staying with local communities, or have tragically perished.

The Nepal Army is actively working on restoring communication and rescue efforts, with over 4,200 personnel already deployed. So far, 779 people, including 119 foreigners, have been airlifted to safety. Emergency officials are prioritizing the search and rescue of the missing, as well as providing medical assistance to the injured.
