Railways may fine you Rs 1,000 for doing this

Indian Railways has raised the penalty for littering and other activities that harm cleanliness at railway stations and trains. Passengers and others could now face a fine of up to Rs 1,000 under the amended rules, which were notified in August 2026. The increase doubles the previous maximum penalty of Rs 500.

Key activities that can attract the penalty include throwing or leaving rubbish, cooking, bathing, spitting, urinating, defecating, feeding animals, washing vehicles or utensils, and storing items improperly. Writing on train coaches or other railway property without permission is also prohibited.

Vendors and hawkers operating on railway premises are required to provide dustbins for waste disposal and ensure it is properly managed. Authorized railway officials like Station Masters, Ticket Collectors and Operating Department officials can enforce the rules and collect the penalty from violators. Refusal to pay the fine may lead to a court summons and a maximum fine of Rs 2,000.
