Norway’s King Harald dies aged 89

Norway's King Harald V passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on Friday, after being hospitalized for a rare blood condition. He had been taken to the national hospital in Oslo last week. The royal flag on the palace roof was lowered to half-mast in honor of the monarch. Harald was Norway's first king born on Norwegian soil since the 14th century.

His son, 53-year-old Haakon, succeeded him, marking the end of Harald's 35-year reign. King Harald V is remembered for his popularity and his efforts to modernize the monarchy, breaking tradition by marrying a commoner. He was also known for his down-to-earth demeanor, respect, and love for the people. In the wake of the 2011 terrorist attacks, he appealed to Norwegians to support each other and avoid fear.

The Norwegian monarchy has become more egalitarian and transparent under his rule. Harald is survived by his wife Queen Sonja, their daughter Princess Märtha Louise, their son King Haakon, and six grandchildren.
