Nepal's flash flood

A flash flood originating from the Chinese side of Nepal's Bhote Koshi River swept through border settlements of Timure and Syabrubesi in Rasuwa district on Wednesday morning, triggering high-alert warnings downstream in Muglin. The death toll is expected to be high as people were swept away by the powerful waters. Prime Minister Balen Shah held an emergency meeting and instructed district officials to evacuate residents from low-lying areas along the river.

This is the second major disaster to strike this section of the river in less than a year. A flood in the same area on July 8, 2025, attributed to the Lhende river originating from Tibet, claimed at least nine lives, left 19 people missing, destroyed the Miteri Bridge linking Nepal and China, and caused extensive damage to the Rasuwagadhi dry port and surrounding hydropower projects.

The impact of Wednesday's flood remains uncertain, but what is clear is the persistent challenge Nepal faces in managing this river, with little change in response since last year's disaster. Authorities speculate that the current flood might have been triggered by a glacial lake outburst in Tibet.
