Matiang’i meets UK High Commissioner to Kenya Matt Baugh

Deputy Party Leader of Kenya's Jubilee Party Dr Fred Matiang’i held a meeting with British High Commissioner to Kenya Matt Baugh in Nairobi on Friday, August 28, 2026. The conversation focused on Kenya's democratic progress, the nation's future, and the significance of robust ties between Kenya and the United Kingdom. Matiang’i shared his thoughts on the exchange, stating on X: "I met with British High Commissioner to Kenya, Matt Baugh, in Nairobi.

We exchanged views on Kenya’s democratic journey, the country’s future, and the importance of strong and enduring relations between Kenya and the United Kingdom. I appreciate the valuable and constructive engagement."

The meeting coincided with Matiang’i's discussions with other Jubilee leaders, such as Vice Chairman David Murathe and Director of Elections Senator Kembi Gitura. The series of consultations brought together senior party officials as they evaluated their political position ahead of the 2027 General Election. Murathe, formerly representing Gatanga as an MP, has been less active in recent months, while Second Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni has been more visible through grassroots activities and media appearances.

The ongoing consultations are part of opposition parties' efforts to unite under a single presidential candidate for the 2027 polls. Matiang’i recently participated in an opposition retreat where principals pledged to collaborate on identifying a unified presidential contender to challenge incumbent President William Ruto. The talks also come amid defections within the Jubilee Party, with Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan leaving for the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) on August 25, followed by 11 constituency chairpersons.

Jubilee Secretary-General Moitalel Ole Kenta maintains that the departures do not jeopardize the party, asserting that the club is seeking "fresh blood" and that the exodus may lead to some MPs losing their seats in the 2027 elections. Kenta has also criticized members of the United Opposition for recruiting politicians from other opposition parties rather than targeting members of the ruling United Democratic Alliance and other parties.

Matiang’i's diplomatic talks with the British High Commissioner add a foreign policy aspect to his party's activities as they prepare for the upcoming election.
