Iran sets conditions for reopening Strait of Hormuz as Qatar pushes for US-Iran dialogue

Iran has outlined conditions for reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz, as diplomatic efforts seek to revive dialogue between Tehran and Washington and end the ongoing conflict. Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei revealed Tehran is drafting a list of demands following requests from regional mediators. Rezaei stated that the United States must take "practical steps" to meet Iran's demands before the waterway can be reopened.

The situation followed a visit by Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who emphasized the importance of respecting freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz during talks with Iranian officials. The Strait of Hormuz, situated between Iran and Oman, is a crucial energy route, previously handling about 20 percent of global oil supplies prior to the war disrupting maritime traffic.

Rezaei suggested the proposed conditions would involve measures to end the regional war and tackle what Tehran perceives as the ramifications of US actions. Recent reports suggest Iran and Oman have agreed in principle to a shipping corridor through their waters, although the specifics remain under discussion. However, the United States maintains a contrasting stance, with President Donald Trump asserting the Strait of Hormuz remains open under US control, claiming the nation has the blockade.

Although the US asserts that it has cleared internationally recognized shipping lanes of Iranian mines, normal commercial traffic has not resumed to pre-conflict levels.
