Grand jury: DeSantis admin 'misappropriated' tax dollars in Hope Florida scandal

A Florida grand jury concluded that Governor Ron DeSantis' administration misused $10 million in taxpayer funds allocated to a charity associated with his wife, but decided not to pursue criminal charges due to insufficient evidence pinpointing the responsible individuals. DeSantis rejected the credibility of the clandestine grand jury report published by CBS News Miami, asserting that no laws were violated and vowing retribution against the leaker of the confidential documents.

The Leon County grand jury concluded its investigation in January, scrutinizing the Hope Florida charity established in 2021 by Florida's first lady, Casey DeSantis. Despite the absence of charges, the report reignited criticism directed at DeSantis and other top state Republicans for the charity receiving $10 million from a state Medicaid settlement intended to aid low-income families in obtaining health insurance.

David Jolly, the Democratic candidate for governor, called for the grand jury inquiry to be reopened. He faces Republican Byron Donalds in the upcoming gubernatorial election in November. The Hope Florida charity aims to assist financially disadvantaged families in connecting with churches and aid organizations to prevent them from relying on publicly-funded assistance programs.

Instead, the $10 million was redirected to political action committees, which utilized the funds to oppose a 2024 statewide ballot measure that would have legalized marijuana for adults. DeSantis opposed the measure, and it narrowly failed to secure the necessary 60% supermajority to become law.
