DeSantis acknowledged the legitimacy of the report but denied any lawbreaking and threatened repercussions for leaking the sealed documents. The money was originally intended to aid poor children through Medicaid, but it was redirected to political action committees that opposed a proposed marijuana legalization measure. The grand jury suggested that James Uthmeier, then DeSantis' chief of staff, should be held accountable, as his political action committee received the funds.

Uthmeier and former Attorney General Ashley Moody, who is now a U.S. Senator, are both running for reelection.
