Govt announces Rs5mn compensation for each family of PIMS fire victims

The Pakistani federal government has announced a compensation package of Rs5 million for each family affected by the recent tragedy at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital in Islamabad. The tragic fire claimed the lives of at least 14 infants, leaving grieving parents in dire need of support. The government's announcement comes as a gesture of compassion, acknowledging that no sum of money could ever truly repair the irreplaceable loss of young lives.

While the financial aid seeks to alleviate the immediate burdens of the mourning families, the government remains committed to providing comprehensive assistance and cooperation to all those affected by the incident. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, vowing to stand by the bereaved families with unwavering solidarity.

The fire, believed to have been caused by a faulty air conditioner, broke out on the third floor of the hospital's maternity ward, resulting in the death of all infants present. Nineteen individuals, including seven children, were rescued from the inferno. Deputy Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry attributed the rapid spread of the flames to a spark from the malfunctioning air conditioner.

Health Minister Mustafa Kamal revealed that despite the presence of 26 fire extinguishers, the absence of water sprinklers in the ward hindered the firefighters' efforts. Eyewitnesses recounted harrowing scenes filled with thick smoke, shattered glass, and a delayed response from emergency services.
