Renowned R&B diva Gladys Knight is announcing a shift in her career trajectory, opting to "ease into fewer performances" as she transitions into a new phase. The 82-year-old powerhouse, known as the "Empress of Soul," revealed her decision in a recent social media post, expressing her intention to focus on projects with her husband and spend more time with her grandchildren.

Knight's announcement follows a few performances that didn't meet her high standards, notably her recent appearance at the Hollywood Bowl alongside Smokey Robinson. While Robinson seemed unaffected, Knight was noticeably less animated, primarily relying on her backup singers to carry the show. Critics have criticized the singer for not introducing her musicians or engaging with the audience beyond superficial compliments.

Knight, a powerhouse of Motown in the 60s and 70s, has recently been a frequent presence on the awards circuit, receiving accolades such as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy in 2024 and the National Medal of Arts in 2023. She was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 alongside her backing group, The Pips.
