Gemini Notebook switching to compute-based usage limits, like Gemini app

In September, Google is transitioning Gemini Notebook to "compute-specific usage limits," an update that follows its implementation in the Gemini app in May. This change replaces the original system that allocated a fixed number of feature generations per day based on the Google AI tier chosen by the user. The new limits will refresh every five hours instead of daily, as explained by Google.

Google's explanation indicates that the overall usage limit is determined by factors such as prompt complexity, chat length, the number of sources utilized, and the specific features employed. To facilitate tracking, a status will be displayed beneath the chat, while a separate indicator will appear at the bottom of Studio generations, displaying the expected AI usage cost. The more the bar fills, the higher the anticipated cost will be.

Gemini Notebook will proactively suggest alternative outputs when the first choice exceeds the user's limit. Additionally, there is a feature called "Generate later," which enables users to delay generating outputs for intensive tasks like Video Overviews or Slide Decks. These tasks will be automatically generated once the usage limit resets, with this functionality initially available for web and mobile users starting on September 2.
