Canadian City Considers Renaming Trump Avenue To 'Taco Avenue'

Ottawa City Council is contemplating altering the name of a street in the Central Park neighborhood of the Canadian capital, currently known as Trump Avenue. The proposal comes from a diverse list of potential new names, including Obama Avenue, Ontario Avenue, Canada Avenue, Beaver Avenue, Gulf of Mexico Avenue, Canada Goose Avenue, Pelosi Avenue, Taco Avenue, and Rosie O'Donnell Avenue.

Councilmember Tim Tierney explained that the idea is not new, as the community attempted to rename the street in 2021, with 21 residents voting in favor of the change, 21 against, and 20 abstaining. The current push for a name change was intensified by President Trump's executive order directing the US government to refer to Lake Ontario as "Lake America," which mirrors the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as "Gulf of America."

Tierney emphasized that while renaming the street might seem trivial, the focus should remain on the significant trade and tariff tensions between the two nations. He stated that the issue of changing the street name will not be resolved immediately and will require the support of more than half of the residents, followed by a public engagement process, which is unlikely to happen before the municipal elections scheduled for the end of October.
