Canadian City Considers Renaming Trump Avenue To 'Taco Avenue'

Ottawa is contemplating renaming a street bearing the name of former US President Donald Trump due to a trade conflict between the two nations. One potential new name being considered is Taco Avenue. This suggestion comes from Councillor Tim Tierney, who described the current name as an embarrassment. The proposed name is derived from an online acronym that gained popularity after Trump threatened steep global tariffs.

Other proposed names include Pelosi Avenue, Obama Avenue, Gulf of Mexico Avenue, and Rosie O Donnell Avenue. The street, Trump Avenue, was named about 25 years ago as part of the Central Park neighborhood's New York City theme. The street was named when Trump was a prominent New York real estate developer. The renaming process is expected to be initiated by Councilor Riley Brockington, who currently represents the River Ward.

He made his remarks during a debate on a motion responding to US tariffs. The council has passed a motion favoring Canadian suppliers and reducing barriers for local businesses, but it does not include the renaming of Trump Avenue. The US has imposed a 50 percent tariff on various Canadian goods, leading to a breakdown in trade negotiations and a boycott of American goods by Canadian businesses and consumers.
