Asian Games chiefs say room for everyone amid accommodation crunch

Asian Games organisers announced on August 28 that all participants, numbering over 17,000, will have accommodation during the upcoming event in Nagoya and Aichi from September 19 to October 4. Initially, about 15,000 athletes and officials were expected, surpassing the size of the Olympics. However, the Olympic Council of Asia later increased the estimate to 17,000 - including 11,000 athletes and 6,000 officials.

No dedicated athletes' village is planned; instead, the Games will utilize a cruise ship, temporary wooden containers, and hotels. Organisers cite budget limitations as the reason for not accommodating more participants. Event president Hideaki Omura stated that the committee lacks both manpower and finances to arrange extra lodging. If athletes still wish to compete, they must make their own arrangements.

The joint statement from the organising committee and OCA confirms that all registered athletes and officials (17,000+) have been provided with appropriate accommodation. No further registrations will be accepted unless there are exceptional circumstances. The figure fluctuates daily and has not been finalized. Temporary arrangements for athletes, including the ship Costa Serena for around 4,000-5,000 athletes and 2,000 containers huts, are cost-effective but may not fully meet the demand.

Organisers assure that the plan remains confident despite Japan's typhoon season, which peaks in September-October. All preparations are on track for what promises to be a spectacular Asian Games.
