Amazon Mechanical Turk to Shut Down Sept. 30 After 21 Years

Amazon's 21-year-old crowdsourcing platform, Amazon Mechanical Turk, will cease operations on September 30, 2026. The platform provided human data and labor for research and AI projects. Launched in 2005, it connected businesses and researchers with human workers for tasks like data labeling, transcription, surveys, research, content moderation, and product categorization.

As AI systems have become better at handling simple data tasks, the need for human judgment has diminished. Amazon announced that it will permanently close Mechanical Turk on September 30, 2026, giving users and businesses a month to transition to alternative options. The shutdown follows Amazon's decision to stop accepting new Mechanical Turk customers in July.

While the platform provided a source of flexible, remote income for workers, it also played a crucial role in supplying human-generated data for machine-learning projects. As AI continues to advance, the distinction between human and machine work has become increasingly blurred, presenting challenges for both companies and workers who relied on Mechanical Turk.
