President Donald Trump has changed the names of various locations during his second presidency, from the Gulf of Mexico to Lake Ontario. The administration has renamed buildings, agencies, and bodies of water, often honoring American greatness or reversing previous changes made by the Biden administration.

On January 2025, Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America and Denali in Alaska to Mount McKinley, the mountain's original Native Alaskan name. In August 2026, he renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America, a decision that Canadian officials have stated they will not recognize, as the name change applies only to US federal use.

The move comes amid escalating trade tensions between the US and Canada, with the latter imposing retaliatory tariffs on US goods in response to the tariff war initiated by the Trump administration.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to the name change on X, stating that Canadians would continue to refer to the lake as Lake Ontario, a name that has been used for over 400 years. Despite the backlash from Canada, Trump's administration proceeded with the renaming. This marks the latest in a series of name changes by the Trump administration, which also includes renaming numerous government programs and buildings after Trump himself.
