Streit mit Kanada: Trump verfügt Umbenennung von Lake Ontario in „Lake America“

Washington - In the ongoing trade dispute with Canada, US President Donald Trump has renamed the lake known as Lake Ontario as "Lake America". The 80-year-old signed a directive in the Oval Office in front of live cameras, which is expected to take effect immediately. The US government emphasized that the majority of the lake's volume and the deepest points lie within the United States, thus expressing that it is an American lake.

According to the president's order, the official US database for geographical places and names is instructed to change the name. Trump reportedly brought up the renaming idea a few days ago, linking it to an economic angle: "The United States is seriously considering renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America, as we no longer expect to engage in significant business with Ontario," he wrote on the Truth Social platform.

Ontario is Canada's most populous province and economically intertwined with the United States. Since the failure of trade talks between Washington and Ottawa at the end of last week, the dispute between the neighboring countries has significantly escalated. Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes, with the other three bordering both the United States and Canada.
