Donald Trump announces Lake Ontario to become Lake America

Democratic lawmakers are formulating legislation to challenge President Trump's recent executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, according to Axios. The significance lies in Democrats' attempts to mitigate the consequences of a deteriorating economic dispute between the Trump administration and Canada. Last week's breakdown of trade negotiations between the two nations led to a 50% tariff on Canadian products, a move Canada pledges to reciprocate.

A Democratic representative from upstate New York, who co-chairs the Northern Border Caucus, is drafting a bill to counteract the presidential decree. Numerous Democrats have also criticized the renaming, labeling it as evidence of Trump's petty, vindictive, and failed presidency. House Democrats' spokesperson, Debbie Dingell, dismissed the order as insane and deeply resentful.

The executive order instructs the Interior Department to revise the Geographic Names Information System within 30 days to incorporate the new name. The order asserts that renaming the lake as Lake America recognizes its vital economic contribution to the nation and its people. Trump has previously instructed federal agencies to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, but the legality of renaming a shared international waterbody remains uncertain.

Canadian authorities have stated they will not recognize the name change. Given that Republicans hold majorities in both houses of Congress, Democrats will face difficulties even gaining the opportunity to vote on their proposed legislation.
