Africa: Africa Brought Deals to Washington - The Test is Whether the Money Moves

The inaugural Africa Business Investment Summit aimed to generate $500 million in structured commitments for the continent. The summit, held in Oxon Hill, Maryland, featured over 500 delegates and focused on turning discussions into capital investments that could lead to enterprise creation and job opportunities. Ghana's Deputy Minister for Trade, Agriculture and Industry, Sampson Ahi, reported positive economic indicators, including a significant drop in inflation and a surge in GDP growth.

However, investors still face challenges in overcoming hesitation when committing capital to African projects. Former U.S. Export-Import Bank president Reta Jo Lewis highlighted the importance of aligning financing conversations with project design rather than being asked as an afterthought. Critical minerals, such as copper and cobalt, are expected to play a key role in Africa's development, but the continent must improve midstream refining capacity to make export restrictions more effective.

Remittances, now Africa's largest source of external finance, are also valuable but come with high costs due to currency conversion fees and lack of government support. Energy infrastructure remains a challenging sector, with low bankability rates and issues around the creditworthiness of utilities.
