10 GOF personnel released as police probe alleged extortion

Ten members of the General Operations Force (GOF) were released after being arrested in connection with an alleged extortion scheme targeting an e-waste factory in Tasek Gelugor, according to police sources. The arrests were made to help with the investigation following a complaint lodged by a victim who claimed he was threatened with money demands after a raid at the factory.

Penang Police Chief Datuk Dennis Lim informed reporters that the police were still gathering additional statements and intelligence before determining the next steps in the ongoing investigation. The matter is being treated under Section 384 of the Penal Code, which pertains to extortion. Police allege that an intermediary approached the victim following the factory raid, leading to the arrest of the entire group.

The ten arrested personnel, aged between 30 and 40, held ranks ranging from constable to inspector, with an inspector being the highest-ranking and a constable the lowest. The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Department of Environment, given the involvement of an e-waste processing facility. Initial reports suggested a demand of RM60,000, although preliminary findings may lead to a higher figure.

Authorities are being cautious about disclosing details to prevent any compromise of the investigation or the potential for inconsistencies in evidence that could later be presented in court. The investigation is currently ongoing.
