Zambry: Comprehensive review of higher education laws needed to keep ecosystem relevant

Higher education in Malaysia requires a comprehensive review of existing laws, according to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir. The review is necessary to ensure the higher education ecosystem remains relevant and not constrained by outdated regulations. AUKU, the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971, is one of the acts that will be scrutinized.

The minister also highlighted the need to guarantee academic freedom, freedom of expression, and student empowerment. The Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) is considering the drafting of a new act, such as a One Higher Education Act, to coordinate various existing acts under a more comprehensive framework. An Independent Committee has been established to collect and evaluate memorandums and views from academics and student representatives.

Fadhlina Sidek, Education Minister, emphasized the Ministry of Education's commitment to expanding access to the education system through a 'humane education' approach. This approach aims to ensure that every child receives an equitable learning opportunity, regardless of location or background. Initiatives such as Schools in Hospital, schools in rehabilitation centers, and K9 and K11 School models for Orang Asli students are being strengthened.

Fadhlina also stressed that the education system should focus on developing balanced, visionary individuals with mental resilience and strong moral values, as children bring intellect, emotions, ambitions, and some come with anxieties or shortcomings that need to be addressed.
