WTC points table scenarios after India vs Sri Lanka Test series: All possible changes

India's hopes for progress in the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka are being jeopardized by the threat of rain, according to a report. The home team found themselves at 218 for 6 in their second innings, with Sonal Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha still at the crease unbeaten. Earlier, Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kusal Mendis had led a rally featuring Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kusal Mendis, raising hopes of a draw if further interruptions occur.

Such an eventuality would be detrimental to India's prospects of reaching the WTC final. Currently placed fifth in the WTC standings with a points percentage of 53.33, a victory over Sri Lanka would elevate India to fourth. However, if the match ends in a draw, India would slip to fifth position with their points percentage dipping to 51.52.

The primary concern lies in the diminishing tolerance for errors as India prepares for the remainder of the cycle, which includes a two-Test tour of New Zealand in November and a five-Test home series against Australia the following year. With four losses already under their belt in the current cycle, India cannot afford additional setbacks.

For India to secure a position in the WTC final, they must triumph in seven of their remaining eight Tests, including the ongoing match. Achieving six wins and two losses would result in a points percentage of 62.96, which may not suffice based on recent qualification trends. It is noteworthy that three of the four teams that reached the WTC final in the past two cycles had a points percentage above 65, with India's 58.8 in the 2023 cycle being the lone exception. The teams that secured the finals in 2025 both finished above 67.

Despite the challenges, India currently holds a strong position in the Test series, with Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain impressing with regular strikes in the final session. However, given that Sri Lanka remains resilient and rain has already disrupted play, a conclusive result is indispensable not just for the series, but also for India's increasingly precarious path to the WTC final.
