U.S. Patriot Missile Stocks in Europe Are ‘Beyond Critical’

The U.S. military is currently facing an "unacceptable" shortage of advanced Patriot missile interceptors in Europe, attributed to the ongoing war with Iran, according to both a U.S. defense official in Europe and a NATO official who spoke to the Associated Press. This shortage poses significant threats to NATO's defensive capabilities.

The issue at hand is primarily with the ammunition rather than the launchers themselves. Many European nations possess Patriot systems but lack sufficient interceptors to effectively fire them. Experts predict that new European production will take years to replenish these stocks. The most alarming shortage involves the Patriot missile interceptors, designed to counter high-speed ballistic missiles from Russia.

NATO's low inventories of Patriots have raised concerns, as a Russian ballistic missile assault on a NATO member state could lead to devastating consequences, with the alliance forced to "take punch after punch in the mouth." The American military in Europe is also warned to have only "very limited" capability to defend against any sustained ballistic missile attack, let alone a single one or an off-course missile.

This shortage highlights the far-reaching consequences of President Trump's decision to engage in war with Iran, which has significantly impacted U.S. missile stocks in Europe. Since the conflict escalated six months ago, these stocks have been redirected to the Middle East, where they have been used extensively against Iranian drones and missiles, resulting in casualties among American troops.

The U.S. has reportedly depleted about 65% of its Patriot interceptors between February and July 2026, compared to Saudi Arabia's 86% usage during its 38-day combat. Ukraine is also in urgent need of more interceptors to counter Russian ballistic missile threats. Approximately 600 missiles are projected to be produced this year, with a goal of 2,000 by 2030. However, given the cost of PAC-3 interceptors ranging from $4 million to $5 million each, replenishing global stocks will be a costly affair.
