Turning bread tags into art in the name of sustainability

Tan Sher Wyn has launched an initiative called "The Art of Breadtags" to promote sustainability and environmental awareness. The 33-year-old Klang resident believed that creating small-scale changes could inspire larger movements. As someone who has always been passionate about nature, Tan found that bread tags, while often overlooked, were contributing significantly to landfill waste.

Inspired by this, she began transforming these plastic pieces into colorful artworks in 2019. So far, Tan has created nearly 50 pieces, featuring various animals, characters, and symbols. Her goal is to encourage people to reconsider their consumption and disposal of everyday items, as these seemingly insignificant items can accumulate and harm the environment.

Tan's environmental journey began after watching YouTube videos about marine pollution and the zero-waste movement and through an internship with EcoKnights. In 2020, she launched her initiative and has garnered support from friends, strangers, and businesses by holding designated drop-off points for bread tags. Despite the challenges of sourcing and creating the art pieces, Tan hopes her work will inspire others to adopt more environmentally conscious habits and embrace the circular economy.
