No ‘DJ Lavani’ shows without suitability certificate: Maharashtra targets ‘vulgarity’

Maharashtra's Stage Performance Censorship Board has introduced a new requirement for public performances of DJ Lavani and other folk forms. Organisers must now secure a "Suitability Certificate" for the script, announcement, or synopsis of their performances. This directive comes as complaints have grown that such shows are being staged under the Lavani label, but using film songs, DJ music, and allegedly obscene dance routines.

The board has warned that misuse of suitability certificates for obscene performances will not be tolerated. Police are authorized to request copies of certified material and other relevant documents if complaints arise. The controversy stems from an increasing number of rural festivals, Dahi Handi celebrations, and election campaigns featuring live dance performances with popular female dancers, often accompanied by Hindi and Marathi film songs and loud DJ music.

Traditional Lavani performers fear that these commercial dance shows are blurring the distinction between folklore and entertainment, impacting their livelihoods. The issue gained attention after allegations surfaced of obscene performances by female dancers during a Nagpanchami procession in Battis Shirala, Sangli district, leading to action against 16 festival committees.
