Trump signs order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America

On Thursday, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America. The Great Lake, located between the US and Canada, shares its name with Ontario, a Canadian province. Trump expressed frustration with Canada, calling them "nasty people" in the Oval Office. However, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney affirmed that the lake would always be called Lake Ontario, a name given by the local Indigenous people long before either country was established.

Carney stated that the name means "the lake is beautiful, the lake is big." The renaming announcement echoes Trump's earlier attempt to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, which has not gained traction outside the White House. The decision to rename Lake Ontario appears to be part of Trump's strategy to address trade disputes with Canada following a trade war initiated by his administration's tariffs.
