Trump renames Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday, renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America, signaling a further deterioration in his strained relationship with Canada. The order mandates immediate implementation and instructs the Department of the Interior, under Secretary Doug Burgum, to update federal government records accordingly, according to earlier reports.

Lake Ontario, one of North America's five Great Lakes, borders the United States state of New York and Canada's province of Ontario. The renaming effort intensifies as trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa remain high.

The geographical location of Lake Ontario presents challenges for Trump's renaming initiative. The lake serves as part of the boundary between New York and Ontario, complicating the process beyond merely altering names in U.S. government documents. Both nations jointly manage the waterway, with each country holding authority over its specific portions of the lakebed and shoreline.

While the executive order empowers U.S. federal agencies to adopt the new name, it cannot enforce the change on Canada, international organizations, or private entities outside the federal government.

Trump's decision follows the collapse of U.S.-Canada trade negotiations last week after three days of intense talks. Both governments blamed each other for the breakdown, exacerbating an already tense relationship between the neighboring allies. Disagreements over tariffs and trade policy fueled the conflict, with Washington accusing Ottawa of unreasonable demands and vice versa.

Trump had previously framed the potential name change as part of his escalating hostile rhetoric toward Ontario and Canada amidst the trade dispute.
